Why Study Physical Education & Health Education at Adelphi University in New York?

Adelphi’s 4+1 pathway is the perfect option for aspiring educators who want a clear, efficient and affordable path to certification. You’ll graduate with a BS in Physical Education after four years, then spend one additional year earning your MA in Health Education. (Earning these degrees separately would require at least six years of schooling.)

  • Benefit from the continuity and cohesiveness of a combined undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
  • After completing this 4+1 program, you’ll be eligible for the NYS Pre-K–12 teacher certification in physical education and health education, which allows you to teach physical education and health education in public, charter or private schools anywhere in the state.
  • Many school districts in New York state and elsewhere now require candidates to be certified in physical education and health education. With both certifications as well as substantive field experience on your résumé, you will be an attractive candidate for any school district.
  • Our physical education and health education programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

Exceptional Hands-On Learning

The pathway is structured around rich field experiences that help students cultivate a wide-ranging professional network and prepare for their first teaching position.

In the BS program, you’ll learn to use exercise, sports, games and dance in age-appropriate programs for children and adolescents—with an emphasis on promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles. This multidisciplinary approach gives you the skills to work with diverse populations in a variety of settings.

The MA program reinforces and expands on the foundation built in the BS program. Students study a range of cutting-edge teaching strategies for the classroom, from skills-based learning to the selection and design of assessment strategies and understanding individual learning styles. You’ll be prepared to explain wellness as it relates to the health content areas and identify the connection between health education and societal issues.

Throughout your five years, you’ll enjoy close personal attention from full-time faculty and exchange ideas with a diverse group of peers in small classes.
