Why Should I Pursue the BS/MS in Exercise Science Pathway?

This program is the perfect option for students who want to enhance their market value while saving on tuition. You’ll obtain a BS after four years and spend one additional year earning your MS—then graduate with the tools to work in fields like strength and conditioning, exercise leadership, personal training, pre-physical therapy education, and more.
 
You’ll also learn to improve the health and fitness of a diverse set of populations, including high-level and recreational athletes as well as people diagnosed with cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, orthopedic and metabolic problems.

What Will I Study in the BS/MS in Exercise Science Pathway?

The pathway revolves around hands-on learning experiences with the Adult Fitness Program, CHANGE (Comprehensive Health Assessment for Nutrition, Growth and Exercise) and personal training programs on campus, all conducted in Adelphi’s state-of-the-art training and laboratory facilities. In addition to valuable field experience, you’ll enjoy personalized attention from distinguished faculty, small class sizes and a diverse, supportive learning environment.
 
The BS program begins with core courses in human anatomy and physiology and an introduction to related professions. After building a solid knowledge base, you’ll transition to practical applications, with courses that cover exercise testing and prescription, strength and conditioning, and clinical exercise physiology. The program culminates in a practicum experience requiring work in the Adult Fitness Program, Personal Training, and strength and conditioning areas. Learning goals are framed by the American College of Sports Medicine’s Exercise Physiologist Certification (CEP).
 
The MS program provides an advanced perspective on the BS curriculum. You’ll pursue coursework in research techniques and further study of exercise physiology, as well as both clinical and neuromuscular application of exercise physiology principles. Through your electives, you can acquire special training in exercise testing, nutrition, the medical aspects of exercise, exercise prescription, rehabilitation and biomechanics. Learning goals are framed by the American College of Sports Medicine’s CEP and Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CCEP).

Who Are the Faculty?

Robert Otto, PhD, FACSM, is professor and director of the Human Performance Laboratory, whose research focuses on energy metabolism, athletic performance enhancement, triathlete performance, body composition and resistance training. John Petrizzo, DPT, is a physical therapist whose research and teaching focuses on biomechanics in sports performance, rehabilitation and sports medicine. Michele Aquino, DPT, is also a physical therapist whose research and teaching focuses on musculoskeletal interventions and the relationship of cognition and physical functioning in rehabilitation. John Wygand is an American College of Sports Medicine Fellow engaged in clinical exercise and sports performance physiology research.

How Can I Enroll in the BS/MS in Exercise Science Pathway?

Your academic adviser can help you design a course of study tailored to your individual career interests.


Admission Requirements:

  • Met all the requirements of the undergraduate major, as well as those relevant to the overall undergraduate degree; i.e., for a BS, all general education requirements and 50 percent of credits completed are classified as liberal arts and sciences (LAS)
  • Earned an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or higher in the BS in Exercise Science major
  • Earned a 2.75 GPA minimum from all undergraduate and graduate course work; 2.6–2.74 GPA provisional admission with 3.0 GPA required after six credits as an MS student
  • NOTE: Only a graduate course with an earned grade of 3.0 or higher, taken while enrolled as an undergraduate, will also count toward the master’s degree requirements.
  • You will need the permission of both the undergraduate and graduate program directors to enroll in the designated graduate-level courses in exercise science, subject to the requirements of each degree at the time of entry.
  • You will matriculate into the master’s degree program immediately upon completing the bachelor’s degree.
